>>TWO THINGS

#1.  We canceled our cable.  *gasp!!*  You know how much I love TV, right?  Like, I love it a lot.  A lot.  But I actually find myself excited about getting rid of it.  I do not need to let TV control my life.  This does not mean that I won't be taking full advantage of Hulu and Netflix...nosireebob.

#2.  It is my turn to pick the book for book club.  Any suggestions?  Any must reads?

I've read the following books these past few months...

Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance by Elna Baker
Gap Creek by Robert Morgan
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
Freakonomics  (half way through) by Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner

I thoroughly enjoyed each of these books, however, I want to pick something new for bookclub...so...let me hear it...what are your suggestions?

  1. You canceled your cable?!?!?! *facepalm* I have no comprehension of this.

Right now I'm reading the third book in The Hunger Games series. It's a young adult novel series, but maybe you could still use it for book club? Very simple, easy reading, nice story. :-)

I've read the Hunger Games series and LOVED it. You'll have to let me know what you think when you finish.

  5. I agree with Melanie that The Help is amazing...I loved it. I also just finished The Book Thief and loved that one too. Both of those are a little longer, deeper meaningful books. If you want a lighter one, read Stargirl. It's about highschool kids, but it's got a really good message and is a keeper.

P.S. Welcome to the world of no cable! We use rabbit ears, and I'm ok with PBS and the main channel shows. :)

  6. I actually have been wanting to read both The Help and The Book Thief. I have The Kite Runner, but for some reason I have never read it.

Heather - I only wish that rabbit ears would work here. Even with the most expensive of antennas, we get no signal. Bummer!

  8. The latest books I have read that I could NOT put down were The Hunger Game series and The Help. Also I love "Beauty" the retelling of Beauty and the Beast and The Goose Girl. I wish I lived by so that I could be in your book club, I need to find me one of those :)

  10. I never really liked Scarlet Letter. The novel form hadn't matured very far at the time it was written (1840s). I also didn't really think Elna Baker's book was all that great. It had some funny parts, but as a whole it was lacking.

Perhaps consider one of David Sidaris' collections of short stories. He is over-the-top funny, and very intelligent. He has a new volume of stories called "Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk."

  13. Two recommendations from Shan: "Bitter is the New Black" (very funny, very sarcastic discussion about the freakin economy, but drops quite a few F-bombs), or "Belong to Me" by Marisa de los Santos, a chic lit NYTimes best seller about female relationships and disappointed yearning for babymakin'.
