>>MY FACINATION WITH RECORDING

I developed a fascination with 'recording' at an early age.  And by recording, I mean making copies of music and movies onto blank cassette tapes.

I would record all sorts of music from the radio...of course, the beginning of every song was cut off, but that didn't bother me much.

Then I learned how to record movies.  I was always needing more blank VHS tapes to record my shows and movies.  I would look through the TV guide and decide which movies I wanted to record.  Then I would sit in front of the TV with my blank tape in the VCR waiting for the perfect moment to hit the "record" button.  I would sometimes record 2 or 3 movies on the same tape.  I remember one mixed tape included The Sandlot, The Bodyguard (you know, with Whitney Houston) and Rookie of the Year.  I was probably 9 or so (and didn't have many friends, obviously).

Then I learned how to set the timer to record a movie.  So I was able to record my shows even if I wasn't going to be home to manually hit the "record" button.  I thought it was the coolest thing ever!

One year for my birthday I really wanted a Karaoke machine.  I couldn't sing to save my life (still can't), but I loved that I could record myself.  I remember me and my cousin singing Trisha Yearwood's song, She's in Love with a Boy and being thoroughly entertained.  We would record, rewind, listen, then record again, rewind, then listen.  We thought we were so cool.

My obsession fascination with recording continues to this day.  iTunes plays an important role in my life in that it allows me to make mixed CDs 'til my heart's content.  I made one just this morning in fact.  I have probably made hundreds of mixed CDs....they are spread out all over the house and in the car...most titled, "Jen's mix."

I think my biggest concern when we made the switch from VCR to DVD player was that I wouldn't be able to record things from the TV anymore (not without spending lots of money on additional equipment anyway).  It was a very valid concern.

So, you can imagine how happy I was when we got DVR.  Holy cow! Best thing ever!

  1. This is me...word for word. Except I recorded MTV instead of movies. I still have Nirvana Unplugged, Eric Clapton Unplugged, and a few episodes of Making the Video.

  2. We have GOT to get DVR! Cable, I can live without. But I think I'll ask for the Wii, Wii Fit Plus, and DVR for Christmas. :) And I commented on your Bachelor post!

  3. I think you could write a very entertaining memoir, Jen. You've already got a lot of great stuff to draw from on your blog. I think you've got some good themes as well.

  4. I remember recording over my mix tapes so many times that you could hear music over music...haha. Now that I have a DVR, I don't know what I'd do without it! Other than probably not watch as much tv...

  6. I SO love your random blog posts. You remind me of my best friend in elementary school-- she was totally random and hilarious. So thank you for being like her. Only I like you too, and have never met you! Weirdos. :) Pretty sure I was obsessed with the '96 Olympics and taped all of the gymnastics meets and competitions. I have them saved in a box with all my Olympic trinkets and things. And yes... mix tapes are the bomb. I have yet to really consume DVR and all that-- I just got my first iPod a few months ago. all in time. :)
