extra bedroom

I need your help.

We have an extra bedroom on our main floor that I am not sure how to use. When I was working from home, it made a great office. Our computer desk is still in the room and so is our bookcase, so, we still refer to that room as "the office," but we never ever use it. It's sort of becoming a storage room now where we put all of our junk. I don't want it to become that. We already have a storage/junk room in the basement.

So...what should we use the room for?

We don't have kids so we don't need a play room.

Our guest bedroom is in the basement, so we don't need another one of those.

My craft/sewing room is also in the basement.

Perhaps we should ditch our laptops and get a desktop computer, so then we are forced to use that room as an office/computer room?

We could put a futon in there and have it be our relaxation/reading room?

Make it an extra TV room so when Curtis is watching Cops (or Swamp People), I can watch something else upstairs?

Perhaps we could just hurry up this baby making thing and turn it into a nursery? I'm kidding about that one, so don't suggest that. Well...sorta kidding. You know what I mean.

I really just don't know.

Any suggestions?

Surely there are those times when you think, "I wish we had just one more room." What do you want that extra room for?

  1. Funny you should ask. I know exactly I would do with an extra room. I would get an extra TV, exercise equipment off craigs list, maybe some free weights, a matt, some videos, and a pull up bar. Whenever I am just sitting on the couch watching TV I wish I had a spin bike or something that I could be doing at the same time, but I don't want to clutter up our front room. So ya, thats what I would do.

  2. First of all, let me tell you how jealous I am that you have too much space and don't know what to do with it. I am constantly wishing we would move or buy a house so I can have problems like these rather than being annoyed every day that the only "good" place to store my vacuum cleaner happens to be right next to my fridge. I do think a workout room with a TV would be great, though! Or, I might move my craft room to the main floor...it might motivate me to craft more!

  3. well...our treadmill is in the basement family room. I thought I would use it more if I put it in front of the TV, but I still don't. I don't know what my problem is.

Jen, don't worry, you will have more space one day. I know what you mean though about storing the vacuum next to the fridge. We've lived in some pretty funny teeny tiny apartments in our day. We've never had a place with more that 2 bedrooms (most places only had 1), so this is pretty new to us. :-) Hey, you guys should come visit us! :-)

  4. I would make it a library/study. I would fill it with books and bookshelves, a nice chair or possibly two, and a reading lamp. I would also have some floor pillows for meditation. It would be a quiet space.

I know how tempting it is to turn on the tv and then just spend the rest of the night there. Try picking up a book every time you are inclined to the tv. You'll find that the reason you don't go to the book is that you lack a nice cozy space for reading. Also why we don't spend more time in meditation.

  5. Brock - I actually really really love your idea. After I read Eat, Pray, Love, I really wanted to start meditating. Also, I could use a good place to read. I have bookclub tonight and I haven't even read the book. Ugh!

  6. Ok, I totally want to come visit you guys! My husband is even up for it...which is weird because he usually hates meeting new people. I think around the holidays might be kind of crazy, but I really think we should work some dates out! :)

  7. I was going to suggest a library too--do floor to ceiling built in bookshelves all along one wall and then next time you're in Utah, get a bookshelf ladder from IKEA ($50), add a few comfy chairs, and you're good!!
