easy peasy duvet cover

I love me a soft, warm, fluffy down-comforter. We have two...a winter one and a spring/fall one (summers are much too warm for one).

I had never known the luxury of a down comforter until my dear husband surprised me with one on our first Christmas. Best present ever!

My advice with a down-comforter is to cover it with a duvet cover to keep it nice and clean. This way, you can take off the duvet cover and wash it and not have to put your nice, fluffy down-comforter in the washer to be twisted and tugged and pulled, etc.

If you are cheap like me (and by cheap, I of course mean frugal), you don't want to pay an arm and leg for a duvet cover.

My solution...make your own.

All you need is 2 flat sheets (full, queen or king depending on the size of your comforter). You can usually find a flat sheet at Target or Walmart for about $11. I like to buy 2 different colors/patterns so that each side of the duvet cover is different.

Once you have the sheets, all you have to do is sew them together. That is it.

Lay one sheet out flat (with the outside of the sheet facing up). I taped this one to the floor to make it easier to line the other sheet on top of it.

Then lay the second sheet on top of it (outside of the sheet facing down).

Then pin the 2 sheets together. Sew around the outside of 3 of the sides (leave the bottom side un-sewn).

Once the 3 sides are sewn together, turn it right-side-out. There you have it...your new duvet cover. Now all you need to do is decide what you want to do on the bottom. You can either use velcro or buttons to close the bottom up once your down-comforter is inside it. You don't want to sew it shut because you want to be able to easily take out the comforter so you can wash the cover when needed.

Here is an example of the buttons on one of our covers.

This is my newest cover. One side is a fun modern print with colored circles and the other side is brown flowers and leaves. I love it.

This is a cover I made years ago. It's blue on one side and white on the other. I love this one too.

See, these covers are as easy as pie to make (at least as easy as a cream pie).

Have fun. And if you do decide to make one, let me know how it goes.

  4. Cute as heck. I made a duvet cover for Jaylynn, and in order to get it all to stay in the right place, I sewed ribbons to the duvet cover (On the inside) and ribbons to the duvet itself and tie it all together with the cover inside out. Then you turn the whole thing right side out and it stays put pretty well, for awhile. I used grosgrain ribbon so they ties stay done a little better. You could probably add ribbons pretty easily. I think I put one ribbon in each corner and one in the middle of each side (8 total).
